In March 2018, the Lower Colorado River Authority (“LCRA”) contracted Irby to perform a 138kV/145kV substation breaker replacement at the Gillespie substation near Fredericksburg, Texas. The Irby scope included replacement of six 138kV oil-filled circuit breakers with new 145kV breakers, and the installation of new control cable and junction boxes at each breaker stand. 

Throughout the project, Irby was able to display its craftsmanship specifically pertaining to aluminum bus work, bending and termination, as well as control cable installation and termination. Executed to LCRA schedule and budget, the project was successfully delivered in April 2018.

West Texas Substation Upgrade Project

Scope: Performed a series of upgrade projects for four major 345kV transmission substations. 
Location: Westcentral, Texas
Client: NextEra Lonestar Transmission

Lone Star Transmission, LLC (“Lone Star”) provides transmission services to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (>25 million customers) primarily via renewable wind energy resources from rural west Texas.

Commencing in July 2018, Lone Star contracted Irby to perform a series of upgrade projects to its four major 345kV transmission substations (Novaro, Sam, West Shackelford, and Claytonville). The project scope included the retrofit 120 Motorized Air-Breaks on existing hand-operated 345kV switches and extensive coordination was required to meet the outage/swap out schedule. Completed in October 2018, the project was delivered to specification with zero lost time incidents.

Scope: Performed a substation flood remediation project.
Location: San Marcos, Texas
Client: Lower Colorado River Authority

In recent years, persistent seasonal flood conditions in and around Hays County, Texas have impacted operations at the Lower Colorado River Authority (“LCRA”) Canyon Substation. In March 2018, LCRA contracted Irby to perform flood remediation works including the installation of a new control house and the replacement of 138kV breakers at the substation. The project involved significant coordination with client and subcontract teams to perform the rehabilitation works within constricted work areas and to a condensed LCRA outage schedule.

The Irby scope included foundation and control building construction (supported by East & Westbrook and Southwest Erectors), panel removal and relocations, pulling and termination of control cable, and installation of a microwave tower. All works were completed to the LCRA outage schedule with zero lost time incidents.

Lampasas-San Saba 138kV Transmission Line Construction Project

Scope: Constructed 33.4 miles of 138kV transmission line including poles and foundations.​

Client: Lower Colorado River Authority

The Lower Colorado River Authority (“LCRA”) is a non-profit public utility providing wholesale power to over a million people in Texas. In December 2016, LCRA contracted Irby to construct 33.4 miles of 138kV transmission line from Lampasas to San Saba in central Texas.

The project was executed in consideration of a condensed LCRA schedule and habitat-specific environmental permitting requirements. The Irby scope included steel structures, poles, 22 drilled pier foundations, and a railroad and major highway crossing.

With assistance from fellow Quanta Services subsidiary company North Houston Pole Line (Irby is also a Quanta Services subsidiary (PWR:NYSE)), the project was successfully delivered to LCRA in January 2018.

Scope: Constructed 13.9 miles of 69kV energized transmission line and conductor upgrade.​

Client: Lower Colorado River Authority

The Lower Colorado River Authority (“LCRA”) is a nonprofit public utility established to provide quality of life to Texans through water stewardship, energy, and community service.

In November 2017, LCRA contracted Irby to upgrade a 13.9 mile 69kV transmission line between its Harwood and Waelder substations to 138kV capable. The Irby scope included the replacement of 112 structures to complete the conductor upgrade and the installation of OPGW shield wire from Waelder to Flatonia substations.

The Irby upgrades (including foundations, tangents, and dead ends) were performed on energized lines with support from Quanta Energized Services and Probst Electric Company (Both Irby and Probst are Quanta Services companies (PWR:NYSE)). Completed to schedule in May 2018, the project was delivered to budget and with zero lost time incidents.
