The Houston IV Battery Energy Storage System, a 160MW/320MWh facility developed by SMT Energy and FlexGen, is now operating and supporting the ERCOT grid. Irby Construction provided engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services for the project.
SMT Energy and CenterPoint Energy broke ground on Houston IV in May 2025. Once construction was complete, the facility was commissioned in just six weeks, about a third of the originally planned timeline. It joins a portfolio of more than 12 SMT and FlexGen projects built to strengthen the Texas grid.
The timing couldn’t be better. ERCOT set a new peak demand record of 91.1GW this July during a summer heat wave, and battery storage projects like Houston IV help keep power reliable when Texans need it most.
Houston IV adds to Irby’s growing BESS portfolio. Our crews have completed more than 50 battery storage projects ranging from 10MW to 409MW. In 2021, we built what was then the world’s largest BESS facility, installing more than 53,000 battery modules across 132 containers. The efficiencies we developed there continue to benefit our clients today.
