The Imperial Irrigation District (“IID”) is a substantial public water and power provider located in southeast California. For over 35 years, Irby has provided call-out services including transmission, distribution, substation, and underground construction work for the IID Energy Service Territory (“EST”) which covers 6,471 square miles, including all of Imperial County along with parts of Riverside and San Diego counties.

As a not-for profit, publicly-owned utility, IID serves electricity to more than 150,000 customers in the EST and Irby is proud to be a regular and ongoing technical contributor to the safe and reliable operation of its grid infrastructure.

Scope: Constructed a 2.42 mile 345kV river crossing including two 420 ft lattice towers.

Kentucky Utilities, a subsidiary of PPL Corporation, is an electric utility which serves over 500,000 individuals throughout Virginia and Kentucky. Between August and December 2008, Kentucky Utilities contracted Irby to perform a 2.42 mile 345kV double circuit line crossing of the Ohio River.

The work scope included structure and wire installation work scopes including two 420 foot lattice towers for the river crossing. With foundation support from Can-Fer (Irby and Can-Fer are Quanta Services subsidiary companies PWR:NYSE)), the project was completed, on-time, to budget, and without lost time incident.

The Southern Loop 345kV Transmission Line Construction Project

Scope: Constructed 53 miles of 345kV transmission line including the relocation of existing 345kV and 115kV interconnection line.
Location: Vermont, USA
Client: Vermont Transco

Vermont Transco owns and manages Vermont’s high-voltage electric transmission system (115 kV and above) and provides service to Vermont’s 17 electric distribution utilities and utilities in New Hampshire and New England.

In October 2010, Vermont Transco contracted Cianbro Construction to build 53 miles of 345kV transmission line including the relocation of existing 345kV and 115kV interconnection line as part of the Southern Loop transmission line project.

As subcontracted to Cianbro Construction the Irby work scope included the direct embed of wood H-frame structures, steel monopole structures on anchor bolt foundations, twin bundled conductor, and two static lines in mountainous terrain. The project was completed on schedule and with zero lost time incidents in October 2010.

Scope: Constructed 47.08 miles of 500kV transmission line in support of two nuclear power plant sites.

The Georgia Power Company (“GPC”) (a subsidiary of Southern Company) provides electricity to over 2.3 million customers in 155 of Georgia’s 159 counties.

In July 2015, GPC contracted Irby to construct 47 miles of 500kV transmission line along existing right-of-way to further the capacity of its expanding nuclear infrastructure. Beginning at Plant Vogtle in Waynesboro and ending at the Thomson Primary substation, construction of the transmission line was completed and energized in April 2017 in anticipation of two new nuclear units at the Vogtle site.

The units will generate enough emission-free electricity to power approximately 500,000 homes and businesses.

Scope: Constructed 235 miles of 345kV and 12 miles of 138kV transmission line in support of a wind farm project in Southcentral Texas.

Horse Hollow Wind Energy Center (“HHWEC”) is a ~47,000 acre 735.5 MW wind farm situated in Taylor and Nolan Counties, Texas. Built, owned, and operated by NextEra Energy Resources (“NextEra”) (via its subsidiaries including Horse Hollow Generation Tie, LLC), the project’s 421 turbines are capable of generating enough electricity to power more than 220,600 homes.

In April 2009, Irby was contracted to construct 235 miles of 345kV and 12 miles of 138kV transmission line to deliver power from HHWEC to NextEra’s customers in the San Antonio area. Completed ahead of schedule and without incident, Irby acted as the prime contractor for the project on behalf of a consortium of Quanta Services (PWR:NYSE) subsidiary companies including North Houston Pole Line, Dillard Smith, Dashiell Engineering, and Can-Fer Utilities.

In addition to the transmission lines, Irby crews also installed over 600 concrete, steel ,and hybrid poles, and strung over 90 miles of bundle conductor for the project. The project was delivered on time and to budget in April 2010.
