Thomson-Vogtle 500kV Transmission Line Construction Project

Type: Transmission
Scope: Constructed 47.08 miles of 500kV transmission line in support of two nuclear power plant sites.
Location: Augusta, Georgia
Client: Georgia Power Company

The Georgia Power Company (“GPC”) (a subsidiary of Southern Company) provides electricity to over 2.3 million customers in 155 of Georgia’s 159 counties.

In July 2015, GPC contracted Irby to construct 47 miles of 500kV transmission line along existing right-of-way to further the capacity of its expanding nuclear infrastructure. Beginning at Plant Vogtle in Waynesboro and ending at the Thomson Primary substation, construction of the transmission line was completed and energized in April 2017 in anticipation of two new nuclear units at the Vogtle site.

The units will generate enough emission-free electricity to power approximately 500,000 homes and businesses.
