Manatee Battery Energy Storage Center 75% Complete

On August 12, 2021, Florida Power and Light released an update on the progress of construction at the Manatee Battery Energy Storage Center project. Fox 13 Tampa Bay ran a related story giving viewers a video tour of the work in progress. Watch the story here. Written news stories also appeared on the Power Engineering website and in the Sarasota Herald Tribune.

When complete the battery system will consist of 132 energy storage containers organized across a 40-acre plot of land that’s the size of 30 football fields. The FPL release explains that the first of more than 50,000 battery modules have been installed. Each battery module can store the equivalent of 2,000 iPhone batteries. When complete the Manatee Energy Storage Center is set to have a 409-megawatt (MW) capacity, delivering 900 megawatt-hours (MWh) of solar energy – enough to power approximately 329,000 homes for more than two hours.

Completion will also allow FPL to retire the existing power plant in Manatee County. The project is expected to save $50 million and reduce 1 million tons of carbon.

Irby Construction is proud to be a part of this monumental project and its continued partnership with FPL. The scope of our work at Manatee Battery Energy Storage Center is detailed in our project profile.

On June 23, 2021, Power Engineering published a story on their website featuring an update on the construction progress being made at Florida Power and Light’s (FPL) Manatee Battery Storage Project. The FPL release on which the story is based marks the milestone of the first battery storage unit installations. When complete, the facility will be the largest solar power-battery storage facility in the world. Irby expects to complete construction later this year.

The article includes some fun facts about the recently installed storage container which is the first of 132 units to be installed. For example, each unit holds approximately 400 battery units and weighs approximately 38 tons. And each battery module is the equivalent of about 2,000 iPhone batteries. The units will store the extra solar energy produced by the FPL Manatee Solar Energy Center.

FPL announced the project in March of 2019. Read about the project scope and details in their release.

$8B in Transmission Loans for Clean Energy Projects

$8B in Transmission Loans for Clean Energy Projects

$8B in Transmission Loans for Clean Energy Projects

On April 27, the Department of Energy announced $8.25 billion in loans available for transmission projects. A story published today at utilitydive.com covered these highlights and detailed more.

  • The total loan amount includes up to $5 billion in loan guarantees for innovative transmission projects, as well as up to $3.25 billion in the Western Area Power Administration’s (WAPA) transmission infrastructure fund. The WAPA revolving loan program is designed to promote clean power in the West.
  • Also on Tuesday, Americans for a Clean Energy Grid (ACEG) published a report highlighting 22 different transmission projects that are considered “shovel-ready” and will add renewable energy to the U.S. grid.
  • The White House simultaneously released a fact sheet on the coordinated efforts between DOE and the Department of Transportation (DOT) to modernize the electric grid. The fact sheet cites the independent analysis in the ACEG report as proof that construction-ready transmission projects would bring more than 60 GW of renewable energy online.

The Biden administration is working toward a promise of 100% clean energy by 2035. Expanding transmission to deliver renewable energy is a critical part of that effort and one on which Irby is currently working in Maine.

Irby’s work in a joint venture with Cianbro Corporation for Central Maine Power is a great example of the type of work achieving the Biden Administration’s goal will require. The New England Clean Energy Connect (NECEC) project is a $950 million investment that will deliver 1,200 megawatts of renewable hydropower to the New England energy grid, bringing clean energy to 1.2 million households. In April 2020, the Irby Cianbro team was awarded a 145-mile transmission line project from Avangrid.

New Lines Withstand Record Breaking Storm

New Lines Withstand Record Breaking Storm

The 2020 storm season has been unprecedented, and Entergy Louisiana has taken one hit after another. Laura, Delta, and Zeta. There is however a silver lining story to be found among all the devastation. It is a success story in which Irby Construction is a proud contributor.

In a joint venture with our sister Quanta Services company Dashiell, Irby completed the construction of 5.6 miles of 230kV new transmission line stretching from Nelson to Manena, Louisiana in June of 2020.

On the company’s third-quarter earnings call, October 29, 2020, the project was cited by Leo Denault, Entergy Chairman of The Board and Chief Executive Officer. While Entergy systems have required much attention in the wake of this year’s storms, Denault pointed out that recent investments in new lines proved beneficial.

“For example, in the past two years, we completed the Lake Charles and the Nelson-Manena transmission projects in the Lake Charles area. Those projects were designed to withstand 140-mile per hour winds. Every structure from those projects remain standing after enduring the brunt of Hurricane Laura, the strongest storm to hit Louisiana in over 150 years,” Denault said.

Hurricane Laura was the strongest storm to make landfall in Louisiana in 164 years and is tied for the fifth strongest to make landfall in the continental United States. Irby Construction was also part of the restoration response to the storm which required Entergy’s largest restoration effort ever mobilized in company history. More than 25,000 workers from 31 states including Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama, Texas, and Florida from Irby Construction worked for weeks to restore power and rebuild downed lines.

Laura made landfall on August 27 and nearly a month later on September 22, Entergy Corporation (NYSE: ETR) announced its utilities had restored power to approximately 910,000 customers who can accept power or approximately 99% of customers affected by the storm. All power was restored by October 1. A week later, Hurricane Delta made landfall.

The Nelson to Manena project in Lake Charles is just one of several storm-resistant projects Irby has constructed or is constructing. Florida Power and Light (FPL) has prioritized grid development strategies to offset storm damage via the increased burial of electrical transmission lines. FPL contracted Irby in April 2019 to provide ongoing technical support services related to customer outreach, engineering design, construction, and maintenance of underground assets.
